United Nations comes to Horsham: talk by Viv Williams, Chair of Chichester & District UN Association

The UN was formed in 1945 with 193 Member States.

The UNA aims to be the voice of the people of the UN. It is the UK’s leading source of independent analysis on the UN and a UK wide grassroots movement.

Rev Terry, Rector of the Parish of Aldrington, started by telling us a little of his journey to becoming a Rector and Chaplain from an early life with musical ambition and having no calling to the church, swapping to theology studies only because he chose to cease law training.

We began by discussing the attendance by atheist Simon Clare (of Horsham Skeptics in the Pub) at an Alpha course. Simon said that he could not judge the course without understanding its content and intention. Simon explained that the course began with a promise to answer all the questions attendees had, yet his own questions had never found an answer. Hadge shared his own similar concerns about the Alpha course, finding it to be a prescriptive rather than an explorative process.

It was clear from the outset that Hadge was a secularist and so the discussion turned to a more personal view of religion and belief.

Martin Wooller, Humanist celebrant, gave a most interesting talk about his role in Humanist ceremonies: baby namings, weddings/partnerships and funerals.

After retiring early, Martin felt the need to contribute something to society and decided to become a Humanist celebrant. He also trains people to become celebrants. After 10 years, he considers this to be the most rewarding experience of his life.
