Horsham Humanists meeting 8th December 2010

We met for the last time in the home of one of the members. Future meetings will take place in a central venue to be decided soon.

This was an action packed convivial meeting in which the running of the group was discussed in some detail, along with a range of topical issues.

Damian Brewer, Equality & Diversity Officer for Horsham District Council, was in attendance and provided us with useful advice and contacts.

A few roles were clarified and it was announced that Horsham Humanists is now a registered association with West Sussex County Council. A new website is under construction www.HorshamHumanists.net

We discussed possible venues. There are various local rooms for hire, as well as some central local pubs. The newly formed committee will decide this shortly.

Funding was considered. One suggestion was to have a small entrance charge for meetings rather than annual subscriptions. A treasurer was appointed.

Andrew Edmondson of West Sussex Humanists gave feedback from the recent BHA annual groups conference.

A simple constitution will be drawn up. One suggestion was that only BHA members would have voting rights. This would ensure that the aims of Horsham Humanists would remain consistent with those of the BHA, to whom we are affiliated.

We all looked forward to the New Year, cautiously optimistic that Horsham Humanists will flourish in 2011. We will be celebrating several national days, e.g. Darwin Day on 12th February, inviting distinguished speakers to give talks, and making further contacts with local organisations.
